Psst. Don't tell anyone but... 14 new resort islands have been located across nine atolls Haa Alifu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Raa Atoll, Kaafu Atoll, Meemu Atoll, Faafu Atoll, Thaa Atoll, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The Ministry of Tourism in the Maldives has advised nine new resorts will be opened in the Maldives this year, this was in a addition to five resorts opened last year, three of which were located in Kaafu Atoll, and one each in Meemu Atoll and Raa Atoll. Two of the resorts opened in Kaafu Atoll were developed through land reclamation. The resorts opened in 2022 include Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, Aanugandu Island Resort, Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort and Spa, Oaga Art Resort, and Madifushi Private Island. The seaplane experience is one of the most exciting parts of the trip, though it is also the most expensive. If you're flying from the US or South America, consider combining your trip with another Asian travel destination, such as India or Sri Lanka, for a well-rounded experience. Where to stay in the Maldives The Maldives is made up of 1200 islands, with most of them being small and occupied by only a single hotel or a small group of hotels. Determine your budget One of the first things to consider is your budget. With so many options to choose from, it's easy to get carried away with upgrades and experiences. To ensure that you stay within your budget, it's important to set a budget for yourself and stick to it. Identify your must-have requirements Before starting your search, it's important to identify your must-have requirements. For example, when I was booking our hotel, I knew I wanted to experience a water villa, and that I wanted to snorkel in the lagoons. This helped narrow down my options and made the process much easier. Choose the right location The Maldives is made up of different atolls, and each atoll has its own set of hotels and Marine life. Based on your requirements, you can choose which atoll and hotel make the most sense for you. Pick the right type of villa The Maldives offers a variety of villa options, including beach villas, water villas, and sunset villas. Based on your needs and budget, you can choose the right type of villa for you. For example, if you're celebrating a special occasion, you may want to opt for a water villa, whereas if you're traveling with kids, a beach villa may be more suitable. Decide on sunrise or sunset villa (for water villas only) For water villas, you have the option of choosing between a sunrise or sunset villa. Sunrise villas tend to be slightly cheaper, while sunset villas offer more privacy and a more luxurious experience. If you're a morning person, you may prefer a sunrise villa, whereas if you're someone who likes to stay up late, a sunset villa may be a better fit. Seaplane and Boat transfers When planning a trip to the Maldives, it is crucial to factor in all the costs associated with your hotel booking. One often-overlooked cost is the cost of getting to your hotel from the main airport in Male. This is usually done via seaplane or speedboat, and it is important to consider these costs before finalizing your hotel booking. Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to seaplane or speedboat transfers in the Maldives: Budget for seaplane or speedboat transfer costs The cost of these transfers can vary, but they are typically not cheap. Before you book your hotel, be sure to check the cost of the transfers and factor it into your overall budget. Timing of flights It is important to note that seaplanes fly only from dawn to dusk. If you book a flight that lands in Male later in the day, you may end up having to spend an additional night in Male before being able to reach your hotel the next day. To avoid this, try to book flights that land in Male earlier in the day. Return flights Similarly, it is best to avoid early morning return flights. This is because you may need to be transported from your island to Male the evening before your return flight. To avoid the inconvenience of an early morning transfer, try to book a return flight that leaves Male later in the day. Instead, consider a half-board (breakfast and dinner) if you wish to save money. as most of the resorts have huge buffets, you'll probably find that you won't even need to eat lunch after trying everything on offer at breakfast and dinner! Ultimately, the best meal plan will depend on your personal preferences and budget, so take the time to weigh your options carefully before making a final decision. How long should my trip to Maldives be Planning your Maldives itinerary can be a bit of a challenge, especially with so many stunning options to choose from. To help you make the most of your time on this beautiful island nation, I highly recommend spending at least 5 to 7 days in the Maldives. This will allow you to settle into your room or villa, explore the island, and truly soak in all that this paradise has to offer. One of my favorite things to do when I first arrive is to spend some time relaxing and getting comfortable in my surroundings. Whether it's lounging by the pool, exploring the reefs in the lagoon, or just taking a moment to enjoy the beauty of my room or villa, I believe that it's important to take your time and fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. If you are planning to hop from island to island, I would recommend adding a day for travel between each destination and spending at least a couple of days on each island. This will give you plenty of time to experience all that each island has to offer and make the most of your time in the Maldives. Final word "If you're looking for a truly luxurious and memorable experience in the Maldives, consider booking a stay in a water villa, especially if you're celebrating a special occasion. I love that at the Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort, each of the 120 villas features a gorgeous private pool. It’s located in the Shaviyani Atoll in North Maldives just a 55-minute seaplane ride from Male and the island has a gorgeous nine kilometer-long house reef directly accessible from the beach. Spread over a 16 hectares of a 600-hectare lagoon the Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort is a secluded paradise, boasting a perfect fusion of white sandy beaches, lush forests and untouched ocean. It's home to the world's first coral regeneration project, the longest infinity pool in Maldives, and prides itself on attentive yet unpretentious service. Upon arrival I was introduced to my butler, who whisked me into an electric buggy, and off down sandy, shaded paths to reach my villa. At the back of the villa, there was a secret garden, complete with a large bathtub and shower, providing a luxurious and completely private al-fresco bathing experience under the shade of palm trees. The interiors of all the villas on the island were inspired by traditional Maldivian design, featuring local crafts, textiles, and artwork, which captured the unique local spirit of the area. Outside, a plunge pool overlooked the Indian Ocean through a gap in the mangroves. As soon as I arrived, I slipped into my flip-flops, immersing myself in the relaxed island lifestyle, and didn't put them on again until it was time to leave. Our mornings started with breakfast at Raha Market, the resort's dining hub, where we indulged in a variety of traditional Maldivian dishes and international cuisine. Azure offered another spectacular sea-front dining experience, featuring a delectable seafood menu, with an array of octopus, lobster, and king prawns. For a truly special meal, we dined at Kata, the signature Japanese restaurant of Fairmont, built over the water and celebrating the ocean's glorious seafood. Here, we savored sushi and sashimi accompanied by champagne, while watching the reef sharks feeding in the water below. Where luxury meets the clouds I've just returned from a thrilling inaugural flight with Beond Airlines from Zurich to the Maldives, and I'm buzzing with excitement to share every detail of this luxury experience. Psst. Don't tell anyone but... The second Manta retreat to take place this March from the 9th to the 13th 2023 at the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort. Guests of the luxury resort get to experience the magic of meeting these gentle underwater giants up close while learning and exploring the research and education around them. In collaboration with the resort-based Manta Trust organisation, a thoughtfully curated programme was made available to guests to educate, explore and raise awareness for manta rays in their natural habitat. This year's Manta Retreat falls into the Maamunagau Manta Season, where young manta rays are found in the resort's lagoon just a few minutes away from shore. The Maamunagau Lagoon is a known juvenile manta ray aggregation point and a significant research ground for the Manta Trust team. "We can assume our lagoon to be a manta ray nursery. We still don't know where manta rays are born, but many juvenile manta rays hang around in our lagoon from December to April. This is a research haven for us, while we, of course, love to head out to Hanifaru Bay during the season as well to observe and research the massive aggregation of mantas there." explains Farah. THE MANTA RETREAT The Manta Retreat will take place from 9th to 13th March 2023 at the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort. The participation fee for the manta retreat is USD 1950 for an adult and USD 1350 for children of the ages 10 and 11. Activities included are three manta ray snorkelling trips, house reef night snorkelling experience, sunset dolphin cruise, several workshops to learn more about manta rays, plankton, turtles, coral restoration and more.
