  • Swimming with the Giants: My Incredible Whale Shark Encounter

A Once-in-a-Lifetime encounter with a Whale Shark in the Maldives Yes, I have done it! A magical bucket list experience of swimming with Whale Shark in the Maldives. Have you ever wanted to swim with the largest fish in the world? I recently had the opportunity to do just that with the excellent marine biologist Pippa at Niyama, and it was an experience I'll never forget. A speedboat ride away to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) is an iconic location for its abundance of Whale Sharks, where they are observed all year round. Our speedboat was called Sea Breeze, which was apt, as the weather was glorious with a gentle breeze keeping us all cool as we made our way across crystal clear waters to the adjacent South Ari Atoll. As we approached the designated spot, Pippa had already warned us the need to move quick upon a sighting to make sure we get the best drop off point. What seemed like no time at all, I heard the instruction 'SWIM". My heart skipped a beat – it was a whale shark! I quickly put on my snorkelling gear and jumped into the water. In the excitement, my entry into the water was not my finest effort, but just see this video below, the Niyama crew were truly amazing, placing us right next to the Whale Shark. Swimming with a whale shark was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Despite its size (I was advised this was a teenager at 7 metres long!), the gentle giant moved gracefully through the water, and I was in awe of its beauty. I was amazed at how close I could get to it, and I was able to swim alongside it for several minutes. If you're looking for an unforgettable experience in the Maldives, I highly recommend a Niyama Whale Shark excursion, they were professional, provided refreshments throughout, and even laid on fruit and pastries for the return journey back to the island This will be a moment I will treasure for ever, thank you to Pippa and her team at Niyama for making my dream come true! Should you also wish to swim with Whale Shark at Niyama Private Island, or if you have more questions about picking the perfect resort, you can contact me and I'll help curate your perfect trip https://www.allthingsmaldives.com/book-with-me Jane

  • The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort

Serenity in Style - A Paradise Like No Other. Finally Made It! The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort has long been on my bucket list, and as my seaplane descended toward this tropical paradise, the anticipation was electric. Just as I was about to land, a downpour began—but what’s a tropical adventure without a little drama? The island's charm shone through the rain, making my first steps on Vommuli uniquely memorable. Greeted with warm smiles under umbrellas, I knew instantly that my stay would be extraordinary. Having explored the Maldives extensively, the allure of these islands remains as strong as ever. The natural beauty is just the beginning—there’s so much more that makes this destination irresistible. Located in the Dhaalu Atoll, Vommuli Island is a 35-minute seaplane journey from Malé International Airport. The resort's dive centre offers access to 26 diverse dive sites, where you can encounter vibrant marine life amidst colourful coral reefs. Catering to an exclusive clientele, this resort epitomises the Maldivian dream, enhanced by the signature St. Regis service. Expect champagne sabrage at dusk, custom-crafted Bloody Marys, and the unique ‘Island Mary’—a seashell-served cocktail infused with local kala namak salt for a distinct flavour. For the ultimate luxury experience, embark on a voyage aboard Norma, the resort’s private luxury yacht. This four-cabin Azimut Flybridge 66 exemplifies modern nautical engineering and reflects the prestigious St. Regis brand. Join me on this journey as I share what I loved about my stay at The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, or jump straight into my Instagram story. Accommodation The resort offers 77 luxurious villas, including 44 over-water and 33 beachfront options. The pinnacle of luxury is the three-bedroom John Jacob Astor Estate, floating above the water with its own staff quarters and a sprawling 92-square-metre infinity pool. During my stay, I enjoyed the Beach Villa with a pool, inspired by traditional Maldivian boathouses with high, angled ceilings and panoramic ocean views. The suite is equipped with all the luxurious amenities one expects from a five-star resort, including slippers, robes, and a beautifully stocked beach bag. The bathroom amenities are comprehensive, featuring the resort’s exclusive sunscreen. Each evening, the turn-down service added a personal touch, whether it was a charming towel animal or a bath drawn with petals. What truly set the St. Regis apart for me were the personal touches. The daily complimentary clothes pressing was a godsend, especially given my busy schedule of sunbathing and snorkelling. Dining The question I’m often asked: “What’s the food like in the Maldives?” At The St. Regis Maldives, it’s nothing short of spectacular! The resort boasts six distinctive dining venues. Alba , with its glass walls and terrace views over the pool, offers an elegant setting for meals throughout the day. The diverse breakfast menu includes lobster and crab omelettes, freshly baked sourdough, creamy coconut granola, Japanese bento boxes, and Maldivian tuna curry. Breakfast at Alba is a highlight, with an expansive indoor buffet and a seven-page à la carte menu. The setting is enchanting, with breezy fabrics and ocean vistas that take your breath away. Each dish was a delight, perfectly setting the tone for a day by the sea. Lunch ranged from casual pizzas by the beach to more formal fare at Alba. Honestly, I was often too full from breakfast to even contemplate lunch! Each dining experience at The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort offered unique flavours and atmospheres. Alba blended Italian flair with tropical allure, Orientale promised a serene journey through Asian cuisines, and Cargo provided an intimate escape into gourmet Indian cuisine. This gastronomic journey not only satisfied my palate but also enriched my stay, making each meal a memorable event. I didn’t get a chance to try it, but the Jungle Cinema is an innovative concept worth mentioning. Set in the island’s jungle, it combines dinner and a movie in an enchanting setting. A personal waiter screens a film of your choice while serving a sumptuous five-course meal. Headphones ensure you enjoy the movie in crystal-clear quality—akin to a silent disco. I’m definitely trying this on my next visit. The Spa The St. Regis spa is world-famous, not just for its lobster-shaped design but also for the mesmerising Blue Hole pool. This infinity pool, equipped with powerful jets, provides a soothing escape with stunning views of the Indian Ocean. Each treatment room, designed as a private water villa, features an outdoor bathroom and unobstructed ocean vistas. I indulged in the Iridium Signature Touch massage at the Iridium Spa. Lasting 90 minutes, this treatment blends Swedish and Deep Tissue massage techniques with aromatherapy, using custom-blended essential oils. The spa’s tranquil setting added to the overall experience, leaving me profoundly relaxed and rejuvenated. The Iridium Spa also hosts daily yoga sessions. I started my mornings with a refreshing stretch under the gentle sea breeze—a perfect way to begin the day. The gym at St. Regis is exceptional, offering top-notch facilities with views of lush palms, adding a tropical touch to my fitness routine. Staying At The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, the butler service is a standout, starting with a personalised welcome that includes a video message from your designated butler. My butler, Akram, ensured every aspect of my stay was seamless and luxurious. From booking restaurant reservations to transporting me around the resort, Akram made my holiday moments perfect. Gym/Wellness: The wellness facilities at the resort are extensive, ensuring there’s something to suit every guest's fitness needs. The gym is staffed by resident trainers who lead a variety of classes, and water aerobics is available in the resort’s stunning pool. For those drawn to the ocean, complimentary snorkelling, kayaking, and paddleboarding allow guests to explore the aquatic splendour of the Maldives. Snorkelling Snorkelling is a highlight among the ocean activities at the resort. Complimentary snorkelling gear is available from the dive centre, and the coral reefs around the resort are vibrant and easily reachable from both the Overwater and Ocean Villas. On my last day, I snorkelled from the dive centre beneath The Whale Bar to the beach, enjoying the rich variety of sea life. For anyone staying at The St. Regis Maldives, exploring these underwater environments is highly recommended. Final Word - The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort “This property is bucket-list worthy and a solid pick for a stay in the Maldives. Modern rooms, polished service, and delicious food. I definitely recommend it!” What distinguishes The St. Regis from other Maldivian resorts is its architectural splendour, reminiscent of walking through a live edition of Architectural Digest. • Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa

Escape to a Barefoot Luxury Maldives Resort. Oh, Where to Begin! The Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa has been on my radar for years. Originally opened as an Alila property in 2009, it was rebranded as a Park Hyatt in 2011. Situated in one of the southernmost atolls, Huvadhoo, getting to this remote paradise isn’t the easiest, but that’s part of its allure. The journey ensures that only the truly committed make it here, and once you arrive, the effort is well rewarded. Hadahaa is the epitome of a remote, unspoiled hideaway. Encircled by one of the most spectacular house reefs in the Maldives, this resort is a dream for snorkelers and divers. Join me as I share what I loved about my stay at Park Hyatt Hadahaa, or dive straight into my Instagram story.   Accommodation   The resort features just 50 villas—36 on land and 14 over the water—ensuring that even at full capacity, the island never feels crowded. With fewer than 100 guests at any given time, Hadahaa feels like your own private paradise. The design DNA from its Alila days is still evident, with little having changed since its original opening. The overwater villas are particularly unique, exuding a sense of tranquillity and understated luxury that’s hard to find at larger resorts. Each villa is spacious, featuring generous indoor and outdoor bathrooms, Le Labo toiletries, and expansive deck spaces. The minimalist décor, with dark woods and cream terrazzo floors, enhances the serene atmosphere.   Dining The resort offers three dining options, each with its own distinct charm. The highlight is Koi , an overwater Japanese sushi eatery known for its creative dishes like the signature hamachi truffle yuzu rolls. Another unique experience is the Treehouse , where up to six guests can enjoy a vegetarian feast derived from the chef's garden, served on a teak platform five meters above the ground. For a more traditional setting, The Island Grill offers a toes-in-the-sand experience, while The Dining Room is the go-to for breakfast and lunch, featuring delights like avocado toast with poached eggs and feta. Despite high occupancy, the thoughtful table arrangements ensure a private, intimate dining experience. The Spa The Vidhun Spa is a haven of tranquillity nestled within the island's lush interior. Each treatment villa is equipped with dedicated changing areas, treatment spaces, and a private outdoor bathroom set in a serene courtyard. My experience included a 60-minute massage, which was the pinnacle of relaxation, enhanced by the spa's stunning surroundings. What sets the Vidhun Spa apart are its five exclusive treatment villas, each featuring an outdoor jacuzzi, a personal cabana, and private changing facilities available throughout your session. The elegant design, reminiscent of the resort's Alila roots, adds to the overall sense of luxury and peace. Staying   Hadahaa embodies the essence of understated elegance with its "barefoot chic" vibe. The centerpiece of the resort is a 44-meter swimming pool, complemented by the Dining Room with its open facade, a breezy bar, and strategically placed beach loungers facing the ocean. This thoughtful arrangement enhances privacy, allowing guests to enjoy the view without facing others by the pool. The resort's stunning visual appeal is heightened by the lush greenery, contrasting beautifully with the pristine white sands and vibrant blue waters—truly the quintessential Maldivian paradise. Meandering sandy pathways lead guests through a natural landscape dotted with coconut palms and Indian almond trees. The Park Hyatt’s architecture, featuring dark wood and traditional Maldivian designs, adds to its unique charm and secluded ambiance. Snorkelling   One of the standout features of Park Hyatt Hadahaa is its unparalleled access to exceptional snorkelling right at your doorstep. Whether you're staying in a beachfront villa or an overwater bungalow, the vibrant 360-degree coral reef is just a few steps away. This underwater sanctuary is home to a diverse array of marine life, including turtles, blacktip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, lionfish, parrotfish, and clownfish, all thriving in Hadahaa’s pristine waters. Guests are provided with complimentary snorkelling gear from the Dive Centre, conveniently located near the main pool. For those looking to dive deeper, excursions are available both on organised boat trips and directly from the house reef, offering opportunities for novice and experienced divers alike to explore the underwater wonders that make this location so special. Final Word - Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa   “For me, the Park Hyatt Maldives stands out among the resorts I've visited in the Maldives, ticking all the right boxes. What I particularly valued was the unobstructed horizon view, the minimal presence of boats, the encompassing reef that surrounds the resort, and the incredible sand quality I've experienced in the Maldives.” If that sounds like your idea of paradise, then Park Hyatt Hadahaa might just be the perfect resort for you. TIP: Make the effort! Although reaching the resort involves a longer transfer compared to those accessible by seaplane, it’s truly worthwhile. The Park Hyatt isn’t trying to outshine the more opulent resorts; instead, it focuses on its natural beauty, making it one of the most breathtakingly stunning places you’ll ever experience. The interior design is warm and inviting, with pitched roofs, slate floors, wooden alcoves, and beautiful curtains that create an Instagram-worthy environment. Beach Villa with Pool Our beach villa was located on the island's scenic sunset side, offering a serene escape with direct access to the sandy shores. Surrounded by lush greenery, the villa featured a terrace and a private pool, perfect for relaxation. Inside, the spacious villa was centered around a large double bed, with a convertible sofa suitable for an additional adult, accommodating up to three guests. The tropical bathroom included both a covered area for rainy days and an open-air shower surrounded by vibrant plants, adding an elegant touch to the experience. Water Villa During my stay, we also experienced one of Fushifaru's newly constructed Water Villas. Originally, the resort had five water villas, but it expanded with a second jetty during the pandemic and renovated the existing villas to match the new design. These spacious villas feature bedrooms that open onto private terraces with stunning views of the azure lagoon. The bathroom, accessible through a fully retractable sliding door, includes a freestanding bathtub. Outside, the private terrace offers a covered relaxation area and a sun deck with loungers and a jacuzzi. Guests can also choose water villas with private pools or overwater hammocks, but the most breathtaking 'pool' is undoubtedly the expansive, turquoise lagoon itself. Dining Korakali Restaurant Korakali is the resort’s main dining venue, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a buffet format that exceeds expectations. Although I’m generally not a buffet enthusiast, the quality and variety here are exceptional. Each evening, Korakali transforms with a themed night offering a range of cooking stations tailored to the theme. The lunch buffet, while more modest, is refreshed daily with fresh, tantalising options. Breakfast at Korakali is a global affair, featuring international favourites, made-to-order eggs, and a special Maldivian breakfast station, ensuring a new culinary adventure each morning. Raakani Restaurant For a more upscale dining experience, Raakani Restaurant offers a premium grill setting where diners can enjoy a live Japanese Teppanyaki Cooking Show. This captivating display of culinary art is complemented by a selection of freshly grilled meats and fish available from the à la carte menu. Raakani is perfect for those seeking a sophisticated dining experience with a touch of theatre. The Spa The spa at Fushifaru Maldives is a tranquil oasis set amidst the island’s lush tropical surroundings. Offering a variety of soothing treatments, from traditional massages to unique Asian wellness techniques, the spa features treatment rooms housed in quaint huts with open-air bathrooms equipped with bathtubs. Adjacent to the Heylhi Spa, there is a small pool and cabanas where guests can unwind in the outdoor area. On my final day, I indulged in a delightful aromatherapy oil massage, providing the perfect conclusion to my stay in paradise. Staying Fanihandi Bar The Fanihandi Bar, located by the large infinity pool, offers multiple sunbeds and sofas with stunning views of the blue lagoon. At sunset, the water turns into a reflective mirror, beautifully capturing the sky and surrounding palm trees. One of the most exquisite sights at Fushifaru is its pristine white sandy beach that encircles the island. The warm turquoise waters gently caress the long shoreline, creating a picturesque postcard-like setting. Underwater Playground Just in front of the infinity pool, the resort has created an underwater playground where young corals are planted through various installations to replenish the reef and attract fish. Among the sculptures, I particularly enjoyed seeing a bicycle and an underwater swing positioned at the edge of the reef. In addition to vibrant fish, we were fortunate enough to spot a turtle in this area. Private Sandbank Experience A short boat ride from Fushifaru brings you to a large sandbank, where you can arrange a private picnic experience. The Fushifaru team sets up a cozy shelter with sunbeds and pillows, allowing you to relax and take in the breathtaking blue vistas while enjoying your snacks and drinks. I was fortunate to have perfect weather during my visit, making the experience even more memorable. Snorkelling Fushifaru’s Diving Center offers guests the opportunity to book various tours and water sports activities, as well as complimentary rentals for kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and snorkelling equipment. I embarked on a Manta snorkelling tour and had the extraordinary chance to swim alongside a group of friendly mantas—an unforgettable experience and one of my top snorkelling adventures in the Maldives. For those visiting outside of Manta season, the underwater wonders still abound. I highly recommend the Turtle Quest tour, which takes you to a reef with a sunken shipwreck surrounded by numerous turtles. The experience is utterly captivating and not to be missed. Final Word - Fushifaru Maldives “For those seeking a tranquil retreat in a paradise setting, Fushifaru Maldives is the perfect resort to rejuvenate and unwind. Couples looking for a romantic escape or honeymoon destination will find the resort especially appealing, while families will enjoy the kids club and the exceptionally child-friendly staff.” TIP: Glamp under the stars on your four-poster canopy bed draped in muslin, and enjoy a specially curated menu from the sea prepared by your personal chef. Watch the sunset and lull yourself to sleep with the waves lapping against the shore. Awake to a glorious sunrise and spend the day reminiscing about your once-in-a-lifetime castaway experience! • JOALI BEING

The First Wellbeing Island Of Its Kind In The Maldives. JOALI BEING: A Sanctuary for Wellness in the Maldives   I recently experienced the unparalleled luxury of JOALI BEING, a wellness-centric retreat that promises a transformative experience in the heart of the Maldives. Having explored many of the world’s top wellness destinations, JOALI BEING stands out as a beacon of innovation and holistic care. Have I found the ultimate escape for wellness enthusiasts? It certainly seems that way.   A Vision of Wellness   JOALI BEING is the brainchild of Turkish entrepreneur Esin Gural Argat, who, after transforming her family business into one of the world’s leading glassware producers, turned her attention to hospitality. Her first resort, Joali, opened in 2018 and quickly became a favourite among art lovers, with its contemporary sculptures and installations. Recognising a gap in the Maldivian market for a wellness-focused resort, Esin conceived JOALI BEING—a place where wellbeing is at the forefront of every experience.   Conveniently located in the tranquil Raa Atoll, JOALI BEING is a scenic 45-minute seaplane journey from Malé International Airport. The flight offers breathtaking aerial views of the Maldivian atolls and the endless turquoise waters, setting the stage for the serenity that awaits. The island itself is secluded, ensuring utmost privacy and tranquillity for those seeking a true escape.   Accommodation   JOALI BEING offers 68 exquisite villas, split between overwater and beach locations, each designed to promote healing and a deep connection with nature. The resort’s architecture is immersive, with shaggy thatch roofs that mimic ocean waves, hand-carved doors resembling tree bark, and walls textured like wind-riffled sand. The interiors are bathed in a soothing Tiffany-blue palette, reflecting the lagoon’s hues and bringing the beauty of the outdoors inside.   I stayed in a beach pool villa that featured outdoor veranda, rain shower and sunken bathtub. The villa’s design was a harmonious blend of modern luxury and natural elements, with high ceilings, stone floors, and light wood accents creating a serene environment. Wellness touches were thoughtfully integrated, from healing bath salts and positive affirmations on clothes hangers to musical instruments that encourage relaxation. The absence of a TV (though available on request) allowed for a more mindful experience, connecting fully with the surrounding beauty.   Each villa at JOALI BEING comes with its own private pool, a butler to cater to every need, and breathtaking views—whether you’re gazing out at the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean or the soft white sands of the beach. Villas range from one to four bedrooms, making them ideal for both solo travellers and families. The calming spaces are perfect for unwinding, with wellness extras like meditative musical instruments, wellbeing rooms, and customised mini-bars enhancing the experience.   Dining   Joali BEING places a strong emphasis on nutrition as a cornerstone of wellness. The resort’s wellness concept, developed by Oxford University professor Gerry Bodeker, a Harvard-trained expert in traditional and integrative medicine, ensures that every meal is both delicious and beneficial. The resort’s dining experiences are designed to support the four wellness pillars—Mind, Skin, Microbiome, and Energy—offering menus that are as indulgent as they are health-conscious.   Dining at JOALI BEING is a journey in itself. The open-plan, interactive dining space features three signature kitchens that serve fresh, locally harvested food, with a focus on sustainability. The cuisine ranges from Mediterranean to Middle Eastern, with dishes that are not only low in calories but also crafted to enhance brain function, beauty, and gut health. I particularly enjoyed the nasi goreng, a dish that was as satisfying as it was nourishing.   For those looking to deepen their wellness journey, JOALI BEING offers a variety of special culinary experiences. These include plant-based dinners curated by the resort’s expert nutritionist, truffle menus paired with artisan teas selected by the Tea Sommelier, and organic wine tastings. One of the most unique offerings is the castaway picnic on a nearby deserted island, where you can enjoy a plant-based feast in complete seclusion.   The Spa   The JOALI BEING Spa is a world-class wellness complex, unmatched in the Maldives. The spa is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including glass-fronted saunas, steam rooms, ice fountains, and hydrotherapy pools. One of the standout features is the salt room, lined with illuminated pink Himalayan salt bricks, which provides a unique healing environment. The spa also includes a yoga sala that cantilevers over the ocean, offering a serene space for mindfulness practice.   The resort’s fitness centre is state-of-the-art, featuring a boxing studio, Pilates reformer racks, and advanced equipment like 3D posture analysis and the Maldives’ first cryotherapy chamber. The wellness journey continues at the herbology bar, where bespoke herbal infusions are created to complement your treatments, relieve stress, or enhance your glow.   One of my favourite experiences was the Discovery Sound Path, an outdoor trail featuring gongs, tubular bells, and lithophones hidden among the island’s trees. Walking this path, striking the instruments, and feeling the vibrations resonating through your body was a truly unique form of self-guided sound healing.   Staying JOALI BEING offers a range of activities that allow guests to connect with the island’s natural beauty and enhance their wellbeing. The resort’s communal experiences include sunset gatherings, sunrise yoga sessions, and marine biology talks, all designed to deepen your connection to the environment. The use of natural island ingredients in creating bespoke perfumes and aromatherapy products adds a personal touch to your wellness journey.   For those looking to explore beyond the spa, JOALI BEING provides unique excursions, such as snorkelling trips around vibrant coral reefs, sunset dolphin cruises, and private picnics on deserted islands. Each experience is tailored to promote relaxation and a deeper connection with nature.   At JOALI BEING, service is an art form. Each villa is assigned a personal butler, or jadugar—meaning “magician” in the local language. These butlers live up to their name, offering service that is attentive, efficient, and personalised to your needs. The wellness experts at the resort are drawn from some of the world’s most renowned destination spas, including Chiva Som in Thailand and Vana in India, bringing a wealth of experience to each guest’s wellness journey.   Final Word - JOALI BEING   "JOALI BEING is more than just a resort; it’s a transformative experience designed to rejuvenate both body and mind. Whether you’re seeking a reset for your wellness routine or simply want to indulge in a luxurious escape, JOALI BEING offers everything you need for a truly restorative stay. The combination of world-class facilities, personalised service, and a deep connection to nature creates a unique sanctuary that will leave you feeling renewed and inspired."   If you feel inspired to visit or have more questions about picking the perfect resort, contact me and I'll help curate your ideal trip. • Maldives or Lakshadweep: A Tale of Two Paradises.

The Maldives and Lakshadweep are only 750 Kilometres away, and part of the same island chain in the Laccadive Sea. Hello everyone! As many of you know, my current trip in the Maldives has been nothing short of extraordinary. It's a place that's close to my heart, and I've dedicated much of my time sharing its beauty with you all. However, recent political tensions between the Maldives and India have sparked a wave of reactions, with some advocating for a boycott of the Maldives in favor of traveling to Lakshadweep. This movement, marked by the hashtag #boycottmaldives, has certainly caught attention. While I've received a variety of responses on my posts, some less polite than others, this situation has piqued my curiosity about Lakshadweep. So, I decided to delve deeper into what Lakshadweep has to offer, and I'm excited to share my findings with those of you who might be wondering about this lesser-known destination. In this blog post, I'll be exploring Lakshadweep - a group of 35 islands off the southwestern coast of India. Known for its pristine beaches and tranquil settings, Lakshadweep is often compared to the Maldives, its more famous neighbor. Both destinations boast of crystal-clear waters, rich marine life, and the promise of an idyllic getaway. But how do they really compare? And more importantly, for those affected by the recent political discourse, is Lakshadweep a viable alternative to the Maldives? Join me as I uncover the charms of Lakshadweep, and see how it stacks up against the beloved Maldives in terms of accessibility, activities, accommodation, and overall experience. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or just starting to explore the wonders of the Indian Ocean, this comparative guide aims to provide an insightful perspective into these two stunning destinations. History and Culture Lakshadweep, an Indian territory, is a mosaic of native customs and foreign influences, including Indian, Arab, and Portuguese cultures. Its history is interwoven with the Indian mainland, offering a unique cultural blend. The Maldives, in contrast, is an independent nation with a rich tapestry of South Asian, Arab, and African influences, making its culture deeply traditional and enchanting. Activities Both Lakshadweep and the Maldives are treasure troves for water-based activities, each offering unique experiences. The Maldives is globally celebrated for its exceptional diving locations, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. Meanwhile, Lakshadweep is quickly making a name for itself with its own noteworthy dive sites. In Lakshadweep, domestic Indian visitors can engage in island hopping to discover the indigenous lifestyle, whereas the Maldives is renowned for its unparalleled luxury resort experiences Beaches Lakshadweep's beaches are a testament to nature's untouched beauty, offering a tranquil retreat with their pristine, serene shores. The Maldives, on the other hand, is renowned not just for its unique bioluminescent beaches but also for its stunning sandy stretches and picturesque sandbanks. These beaches, with their powdery white sands and clear turquoise waters, are the epitome of a tropical paradise, making the Maldives an iconic beach destination Accommodation and Cost Lakshadweep offers an authentic and budget-friendly experience with government-operated resorts. In contrast, the Maldives is synonymous with luxury, offering a wide range of extravagant overwater bungalows and resorts. The Maldives boasts a remarkable count of 172 resorts, featuring some of the most prestigious luxury hotel brands in the world spread across its numerous islands. The total number of tourist facilities in the Maldives reaches an impressive 1,220, including 152 safari vessels, 883 guest houses, 13 hotels, and 172 resorts. In contrast, Lakshadweep currently lacks any five-star resorts. However, there's exciting news on the horizon: IHCL has plans to open two Taj-branded resorts in Lakshadweep, specifically on Suheli and Kadmat islands. These anticipated developments, however, are projected to materialize in at least five years. Cuisine The culinary scene in Lakshadweep is a delightful mix of Kerala and Arabian flavors, focusing on seafood and coconut-based dishes. The Maldivian cuisine, too, centers around seafood, complemented by coconut and tropical fruits, offering an immersive dining experience. Due to environmental concerns, the introduction of alcohol into Lakshadweep is strictly prohibited, meaning any sunset gatherings along the stunning shores of the Indian Ocean will be alcohol-free. On the other hand, the Maldives, an Islamic nation, offers a different experience. In its resorts and tourist areas, there are no such restrictions on alcohol, allowing guests to enjoy their drinks amidst the breathtaking Maldivian landscapes. Visa Requirements and Accessibility Lakshadweep requires special permits for non-residents, you need to book your packages in advance whilst focusing on environmental preservation. Foreign tourists are allowed to visit islands like Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat. The Maldives, known for its straightforward visa process, offers a visa on arrival for many nationalities, where you can book your flights today and land tomorrow, enhancing its international accessibility. Best Time to Visit The ideal time to visit Lakshadweep is from October to April, perfect for water activities and exploring the landscapes. The Maldives is best visited from November to April, with the peak season from December to March. Conclusion Choosing between Maldives and Lakshadweep ultimately depends on what you seek in an island retreat. If luxury and indulgence are what you desire, the Maldives is your go-to destination. For those domestic Indian travellers looking for an authentic, serene, and budget-friendly escape, Lakshadweep is the perfect choice. Both destinations offer unique experiences, and no matter where you choose to go, you’re in for a treat of nature’s best. Moreover, guests have the opportunity to engage in art-making at the onsite studio. The Manta Ray Treehouse One of the resort's most striking and photogenic features is the treehouse, designed by Cape Town artist Porky Hefer. This structure, resembling a giant manta ray, is nestled among the palm trees and features a spiraling wooden pathway mimicking the creature’s tail. This artistic nod celebrates the Maldives’ significant population of reef mantas and serves as a private, intimate dining spot that offers an imaginative alternative to the conventional beachside dinner. From its curved seating, diners can enjoy breathtaking views of the lush treetops and clear turquoise waters. The menu options range from Indonesian to Sri Lankan and local Maldivian cuisines, with breakfast being a particularly lavish affair featuring a selection of omelets, fresh pastries, and tropical teas. The resort offers an art studio where guests can participate in workshops led by resident artist Nataliya Kuleshova. Additionally, the resort's Women in Arts program promotes gender equality by showcasing and supporting the work of female artists through exhibitions and collaborative projects.
