InterContinental Maldives: Where time stops and beautiful stories unfold. There’s something truly special about returning to a place that holds so many cherished memories. This past trip to the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort was a homecoming of sorts, yet the magic of this secluded island never faded. Even though I had been here before, this time felt just as enchanting—if not more so. The InterContinental Maldives always leaves a lasting impression, and the sheer beauty and tranquility of this resort make it impossible not to fall in love all over again. Location and Arrival: The Start of a Dream The journey to the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is an experience in itself. After a long flight, there's nothing quite like the feeling of stepping onto a seaplane, your window seat offering aerial views of coral atolls and pristine lagoons. The 45-minute flight from Malé is not just a transfer; it's a gateway to paradise. As I sat back, I couldn’t help but marvel at how the Maldives never loses its allure, no matter how many times you visit. The moment we began our descent over the Raa Atoll, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The island’s location, far removed from the noise of everyday life, ensures a sense of privacy and seclusion that is hard to come by. Upon landing, I was warmly greeted by my personal curator Thorif, who welcomed me back with the kind of thoughtful gestures I’ve come to expect from the InterContinental brand. From the cool towels and refreshments in the private seaplane lounge to the quiet sense of calm that surrounded me, the experience set the perfect tone for the days ahead. Accommodation The accommodations at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort are an integral part of this InterContinental Maldives review. With 81 villas offering everything from beachfront seclusion to overwater luxury, the resort provides options to suit every preference while maintaining an unwavering commitment to comfort and elegance. Overwater Villas: A Floating Oasis My recent stay in a Overwater Villa was the epitome of Maldivian luxury. Perched above the lagoon, the villa featured a private infinity pool, direct access to the water, and panoramic ocean views that stretched endlessly toward the horizon. Waking up each morning to the sound of the gentle waves beneath my villa was a memory I’ll cherish forever. The overwater experience is a must for any traveller looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Maldives. Beach Villas: Natural Seclusion My last visit I had the privilege of staying in one of the resort’s Beach Villa's hidden among the lush greenery and offering direct access to a pristine stretch of beach, the villa felt like a world unto itself. The private pool, spacious outdoor deck, and minimalist yet luxurious interiors made for an idyllic retreat. Each villa seamlessly blends modern comforts with local craftsmanship, incorporating natural materials and Maldivian-inspired decor. For those seeking a deep connection with nature, these villas offer the perfect escape. Lagoon Villas: A Blend of Land and Sea For those torn between a beach and overwater experience, the Lagoon Villas offer the perfect compromise. These villas are situated near the lagoon, surrounded by lush greenery on one side and tranquil waters on the other. The spacious interiors, private pools, and breathtaking views make these villas an ideal choice for those looking to experience the best of both worlds in luxurious comfort. Dining If you’ve followed my travels for a while, you’ll know that after snorkelling, dining is one of my greatest passions. Staying on an all-inclusive basis at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort gave me plenty of opportunities to indulge. With a selection of three standout restaurants, each offering its own unique dining experience, every meal felt like a journey for the senses. Café Umi: Relaxed Elegance Every morning at Café Umi was a celebration of flavours. This open-air, all-day dining venue offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely breakfast. I couldn’t resist the vibrant Maldivian tuna mashuni, paired with tropical fruits and freshly baked pastries. There’s something wonderfully indulgent about starting your day with such a fresh and flavorful spread while surrounded by the breathtaking natural beauty of the Maldives. The Lighthouse: Elevated Mediterranean Dining As evening fell, The Lighthouse became my go-to for a truly elevated dining experience. Set over the water, this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant offers refined dishes with subtle Maldivian influences. Dining here feels like an event—each course was beautifully presented and paired with impeccable wines. The grilled seafood, delicate and perfectly seasoned, was a standout, but it was the romantic setting and ever-changing colors of the Maldivian sky that made each evening at The Lighthouse feel utterly magical. Read the full Lighthouse  review. Fish Market: A Sea-to-Table Experience At the Fish Market, dining is interactive, fresh, and authentically Maldivian. Guests can choose their seafood, freshly caught by local fishermen, which is then expertly prepared with local spices. This sea-to-table concept delivers a truly authentic taste of the Maldives, with the flavours of the ocean brought to life through traditional Maldivian cooking techniques. It's a must-visit for those looking to immerse themselves in the island’s culinary heritage. Teppanyaki with Elegance The newest addition to the resort’s culinary offerings, the Teppanyaki restaurant, brings the excitement of Japanese teppan cooking to the Maldives in an indoor, refined setting. Gathering around the grill, guests are treated to a performance of culinary mastery as chefs prepare succulent wagyu beef and perfectly seared tuna right before your eyes. Every dish is crafted with precision and incorporates the freshest ingredients, subtly infused with Maldivian influences. The intimate setting and sleek design elevate this dining experience, making it as visually captivating as it is delicious. The Retreat - Adults Only hideaway If there’s one hidden gem at the resort, it’s The Retreat—an adults-only space designed for pure relaxation. Tucked away at the edge of the island, The Retreat offers private cabanas, an infinity pool, and personalised service that makes you feel like the only guest on the island. It was here that I spent an entire afternoon, lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand, enjoying the serenity that comes with being completely disconnected from the world . Experiences Beyond the luxury accommodations and world-class dining, the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resortoffers a variety of activities that make every day feel like an adventure. Swimming with Manta Rays: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience One of the most unforgettable moments of my trip was the opportunity to swim with manta rays in their natural habitat. Through the resort’s partnership with the Manta Trust , I joined a guided snorkeling trip that brought me face-to-face with these majestic creatures. Watching the manta rays glide gracefully through the water, I felt a deep connection to the ocean. It’s an experience that leaves you in awe, not just of the marine life, but of the sheer beauty that surrounds this island. AVI Spa: Wellness Above the Water After days of adventure, I treated myself to some much-needed relaxation at the AVI Spa. The spa, with its overwater treatment rooms, is designed to calm both the body and the mind. I opted for a traditional Maldivian massage, and the combination of expert hands, soothing oils, and the sound of the ocean lapping beneath me created a state of pure bliss. The spa also offers a range of wellness treatments, including yoga sessions at sunrise and sunset, allowing you to rejuvenate while taking in the breathtaking views. Sunset Dolphin Cruise: An Evening to Remember One evening, I joined a sunset dolphin cruise, where we sailed into the open waters to watch pods of dolphins playfully surf the waves. As the sun set and painted the sky with hues of pink and gold, the sight of dolphins leaping through the air added to the magic of the moment. It was one of those rare experiences where you’re reminded of the wonders of nature, and the importance of taking time to simply enjoy life’s beauty. • Velaa Private Island

It Began With A Dream Velaa Private Island: The Epitome of Maldivian Luxury I recently had the pleasure of staying at Velaa Private Island, a hidden gem in the Maldives that promises an unparalleled luxury experience. And yes, it really did deliver. Have I found the one? Possibly! And I’ve been searching for 20 years 😉 Velaa Private Island stands as one of the world’s most exclusive resorts, a testament to the vision of Czech entrepreneurs Radka and Jiří Šmejc, who sought to create the ultimate private island retreat. Born from their love for the Maldives Jiří vision was to create an island to gift to his wife that reminded them of many happy years at Huvafen Fushi. I noticed a few similarities with the design of Velaa to Huvafen Fushi (his first love).   Conveniently located in the Noonu Atoll, Velaa is accessible by a scenic 45-minute seaplane flight from Malé International Airport. The journey itself is a breathtaking experience, offering aerial views of the stunning atolls and turquoise waters. The island is secluded, ensuring utmost privacy and tranquillity, with no disturbances from flight or boat paths. I was fortunate to fly in their Velaa branded seaplane that has just 9 luxurious seats, and as you can imagine, some lovely touches such as branded earplugs, mints, and Evian water—they really have thought about everything. Even the pilots were delighted with the extras, especially the cold towels! The name “Velaa” means “turtle” in Dhivehi, the local Maldivian language—a fitting tribute to the generations of sea turtles that inhabit the island and its surrounding reefs. This connection to nature is reflected throughout the resort, with subtle turtle motifs woven into the design, and the over-water villas forming the head of a turtle when viewed from above. Velaa’s commitment to thoughtful and extraordinary design is evident in every detail, making it a place where nature and luxury coexist harmoniously. Accommodation Velaa Private Island offers some of the world’s most exclusive accommodations, each designed with the principles of privacy, comfort, and luxury in mind. The resort features 47 villas and residences, 18 of which are built over water, all offering stunning ocean views and unparalleled elegance. Every villa at Velaa includes a spacious private pool and is designed with the finest natural materials, showcasing warm tones of brown, black, gold, and blue. The smallest accommodations start at a generous 223 square meters, providing ample space for relaxation and luxury. The categories available include: I stayed in a deluxe beach bungalow villa no. 6, which was the epitome of sophistication. The villa featured a private pool, spacious living areas, and direct access to the beach. The interiors were a harmonious blend of modern design and traditional Maldivian elements, creating a cozy yet luxurious ambiance. The service was impeccable, with my personal butler surprising and delighting me with discreet efficiency. Dining Velaa Private Island is a culinary paradise, with dining experiences that reflect the owners' deep passion for gastronomy. The resort’s restaurants are not only beautifully designed but also offer some of the finest cuisine in the Maldives, accompanied by the best wine cellar in the region. Aragu is the resort’s signature fine dining restaurant, where Executive Chef Gaushan De Silva presents contemporary European cuisine with an Asian twist. The level of craftsmanship here rivals many Michelin-starred establishments, making it a must-visit for gourmet enthusiasts. Tavaru Restaurant is housed within a striking 23-meter-tall cylindrical structure designed by Czech architect Petr Kolář. Resembling an alien watchtower with its asymmetrical discs and circular openings, Tavaru offers a unique dining experience focused on Teppanyaki grill cuisine. Guests can savor Japanese delicacies such as Teriyaki Black Cod and Kagoshima A5 Tenderloin, prepared live on Teppanyaki grills, all while enjoying breathtaking views over the island and ocean. Beneath the restaurant lies the Tavaru Wine Cellar , home to over 1,000 labels, making it one of the most extensive wine collections in South Asia. Athiri Restaurant offers beachfront all-day dining with a menu that creatively reinterprets global cuisine. Chefs from 14 different nationalities contribute to a diverse culinary experience, with highlights including freshly baked pizzas from the wood-fired oven and the award-winning Lemongrass Poached Lobster. Faiy is the resort’s wellbeing restaurant, offering light, healthy meals with serene views of the golf course—perfect for those seeking a balanced and nourishing dining experience. For a more relaxed atmosphere, CRU Champagne Bar is the place to sample some of the world’s most exclusive champagnes in an overwater setting. AVI Bar provides poolside cocktails with live DJ beats in the evening, while the newly opened Beach Bar offers refreshing juices and cocktails right on the sand. Don’t miss the signature cocktails featuring tequila infused with chili pepper—a drink that delivers a refreshing kick! Staying Velaa Private Island is a true paradise, with its snow-white beaches lined with gently swaying palm trees and its interior lush with meticulously maintained vegetation. The island's nearly perfect circular shape is a rare feature in the Maldives, enhancing its unique charm. Whether walking or cycling, exploring Velaa feels like traversing an immaculate tropical garden, where every turn reveals another breathtaking vista. The resort’s communal spaces were designed by Czech architects and interior designers, guided by the vision of the owners to create the world’s most luxurious private island “home.” The architecture seamlessly blends contemporary luxury with subtle Maldivian touches, using the finest materials such as solid wood, which helps blur the boundaries between the natural environment and human craftsmanship. Velaa Private Island is the only ultra-luxury resort in the Maldives that features its own golf course. Velaa Golf Academy by Olazábal is a unique golfing experience that stretches over seven holes and nine tees but offers numerous combinations. The golf course is designed by José María Olazábal, renowned for his short game mastery, and managed by Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management. Velaa boasts a studio offering one-on-one tuition with PGA professionals. The academy also holds swing analysis software with the latest technology and is equipped with a state-of-the-art Trackman simulator to enhance the golfing experience. A putting green and tailor-made tuition programs make the Velaa Golf Academy an experience for the whole family to enjoy. For sports enthusiasts, Velaa offers an impressive array of facilities, including the Maldives' only fully covered tennis court, a squash court, table tennis, a climbing wall, beach volleyball, and a football pitch. The state-of-the-art gym is equipped with the latest Technogym fitness equipment, and guests can also participate in personalised yoga and meditation sessions held in an elevated Yoga Pavilion or on the beach. Water sports lovers as you’d expect, they have top-of-the-range motorised sports facilities, certainly the most exciting and extensive in the Maldives, from seabobs and jetpack-style jetovators to new slick yachts available for charter. The Spa The Velaa Spa is a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation, housed in a stunning overwater structure. The spa features six spacious treatment villas and offers a variety of signature treatments. It also boasts the Maldives' only ‘Snow Room’ and the exclusive “Cloud 9” relaxation experience, combining cutting-edge technology with the timeless art of touch. The wellbeing village is a new addition to Velaa as of Summer 2023, a hyper-wellness concept fusing Ayurveda and osteopathic practices, comprising a treatment centre, yoga pavilion, and a new detox-friendly restaurant called Faiy, which dishes out wholesome, health-conscious gourmet cuisine that’s just as tasty as the other island venues. Snorkelling For those looking to explore beyond the island, Velaa provides a range of unique excursions, including big game fishing, snorkeling trips around untouched reefs, gourmet meals on deserted islands, and dolphin sunset cruises—ensuring there’s something to fulfil every adventurer’s dream. Final Word - Velaa Private Island "Velaa Private Island began as a dream—a vision to create the perfect holiday destination where privacy, luxury, and unparalleled experiences come together. The result is a reality that surpasses even the highest expectations. • Vakkaru Maldives

Vakkaru Maldives: A Timeless Tropical Sanctuary Tucked away in the crystal-clear waters of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll, Vakkaru Maldives offers an exceptional blend of luxury, natural beauty, and Maldivian charm. This private island resort is an idyllic escape for travelers seeking an unforgettable retreat, whether for a romantic getaway, a family holiday, or simply a tranquil break from the ordinary. In this post, I’ll take you through my recent experience at Vakkaru Maldives, highlighting everything from the incredible accommodation options to dining, spa treatments, and world-class snorkeling experiences. Arrival: A Scenic Start to Paradise The journey to Vakkaru is nothing short of spectacular. From Malé’s Velana International Airport, the resort is a scenic 25-30 minute seaplane flight away. I highly recommend having your camera ready—this is one of those experiences that feels surreal as you fly over the stunning turquoise lagoons and coral atolls of the Maldives. The aerial view is a perfect introduction to the breathtaking beauty that awaits at Vakkaru. Upon landing, I was greeted by the warmth of the staff, who welcomed me with a refreshing drink and live drums at the jetty. The check-in process was seamless and stress-free, made even more comfortable by the private lounge at the seaplane terminal, where I was able to freshen up after my long-haul flight from the UK. Trust me, you’ll want to pack a pair of shorts in your carry-on, as the seaplane isn’t air-conditioned, and the Maldivian heat can be intense! Accommodation at Vakkaru Vakkaru Maldives boasts 113 villas and suites, offering both beachfront and overwater options, each designed to provide guests with ample space, privacy, and stunning ocean views. Whether you’re staying in a Beach Villa, surrounded by lush vegetation and soft white sands, or an Overwater Villa perched above the lagoon, you’ll be treated to an exceptional experience. I had the pleasure of staying in the One-Bedroom Overwater Pool Villa, a stunning retreat that encapsulates the essence of luxury living. The villa’s open-plan layout, with floor-to-ceiling windows, brought the outside in, allowing me to wake up to uninterrupted views of the endless ocean each morning. The private infinity pool overlooking the turquoise waters was the perfect spot for a peaceful afternoon dip, while the spacious sundeck provided an idyllic setting for soaking up the sun or enjoying a good book. The villa also featured a separate living area, adding a touch of homey comfort to the experience. For families, the resort offers a variety of family-friendly beach villas that provide ample space and separate sleeping areas for children, ensuring that both parents and little ones can relax in comfort. Each villa comes with modern amenities, including iPads to control the lighting, air conditioning, and curtains. You’ll never want to leave your villa, but when you do, bicycles are provided for a leisurely ride around the island, making it easy to explore. Dining at Vakkaru One of the most delightful aspects of staying at Vakkaru is its diverse dining options, catering to a wide range of tastes. The resort offers five restaurants and two bars, each with a distinct ambiance and menu. Amaany is the resort’s main restaurant and the perfect place to start your day. Breakfast here is a lavish affair, with an impressive spread that includes fresh pastries, tropical fruits, and made-to-order dishes from live cooking stations. Whether you prefer a traditional Maldivian breakfast or international favorites like waffles and eggs benedict, Amaany has something for every palate. For a fine-dining experience, Vakku is the resort’s signature beachfront restaurant, specializing in grilled seafood and premium cuts of meat. With the soft sand beneath your feet and the sound of the waves gently lapping the shore, the setting is as exquisite as the menu. I highly recommend the catch of the day, paired with a glass of wine from the resort’s extensive wine cellar. At Onu , the resort’s Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant, you’ll be treated to a culinary journey through Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The open-air bamboo structure creates a laid-back yet elegant atmosphere, while the dishes—like the lobster yellow curry—are bursting with vibrant flavors. If you’re in the mood for Italian, Isoletta offers authentic dishes in a poolside setting. From wood-fired pizzas to freshly made pasta, it’s the perfect spot for a casual lunch. And don’t forget to visit Lagoon Bar , where you can enjoy sushi, sashimi, and signature cocktails while watching the sunset over the water. Trust me, it’s magical! TIP: Don’t make the same mistake I did—leave enough time to experience a wine tasting at the Vakkaru Reserve . The cellar boasts an impressive collection of 8,000 bottles, and the sommelier-led tasting is an experience not to be missed. I paired mine with a cheese platter, and it was one of the highlights of my stay. Merana Spa No luxury island escape is complete without indulging in some spa treatments, and The Merana Spa at Vakkaru is one of the best I’ve experienced. Set over the water, the spa offers panoramic views of the lagoon, making it an incredibly serene environment for relaxation and rejuvenation. The spa has six treatment rooms, each with glass floors, allowing you to watch the colorful marine life swim by as you enjoy your massage. I opted for the signature Balinese massage, and it was heavenly—hands down, one of the best massages I’ve ever had. The combination of the therapist’s expert technique and the tranquil setting made it a truly unforgettable experience. The spa also offers a variety of wellness treatments, including Ayurvedic therapies, body scrubs, and facials. For those looking to keep up their fitness routine, Vakkaru’s overwater gym provides state-of-the-art equipment, while the Yoga Pavilion offers daily yoga sessions with spectacular ocean views. After your treatment, make sure to spend some time in the whirlpool, cold plunge pool, sauna, and steam rooms, all designed to leave you feeling completely revitalised. Family-Friendly Fun: A Tropical Playground for All Ages Vakkaru Maldives is a family-friendly resort that caters to guests of all ages. The Parrotfish Club is a professionally run kids’ club offering a variety of fun activities for children aged 3 to 12, including treasure hunts, arts and crafts, and even cooking classes. With a dedicated team of childcare professionals, parents can enjoy some time to themselves, knowing their little ones are in safe hands. For teens, the Coconut Club provides a chill space with pool tables, video games, and table tennis, making it the perfect hangout spot. There are also bicycles available for all ages, so families can explore the island together. Snorkeling at Vakkaru One of the most extraordinary aspects of Vakkaru Maldives is its proximity to some of the most biodiverse waters in the Maldives. Located within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the resort offers easy access to some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving spots. While the island itself has a vibrant house reef where you can snorkel right from the beach or your overwater villa, the real magic happens just a short speedboat ride away at Hanifaru Bay. From June to November, this marine protected area becomes a feeding ground for manta rays and whale sharks. Although I didn’t get to see any whale sharks during my stay, I did have the privilege of swimming with manta rays—an awe-inspiring experience that I’ll never forget. If you visit during the monsoon season, a trip to Hanifaru Bay should be at the top of your list! The resort’s Splash Watersports Centre offers complimentary snorkeling equipment, and for those looking to dive deeper, their PADI-certified instructors can arrange diving excursions to nearby reefs. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, the marine life here is abundant and colourful, with everything from parrotfish and turtles to blacktip reef sharks. • InterContinental Maldives Review

The Maldives has become synonymous with luxury, and the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort stands out as one of the crown jewels in this prestigious destination. Since opening in 2019, this resort has brought InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) into the fold of Maldivian luxury, offering a seamless blend of modern comfort, natural beauty, and personalized service. In this InterContinental Maldives review, we explore the resort’s breathtaking villas, gourmet dining, world-class spa, eco-conscious efforts, and the unforgettable experiences on offer in the Raa Atoll. Location and Accessibility Located on the southernmost tip of the Raa Atoll, the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is a secluded paradise. Guests can reach the resort via a scenic 45-minute seaplane flight from Malé International Airport, taking in the stunning views of the turquoise ocean and coral atolls. Upon arrival, a dedicated host greets each guest and arranges a quick transfer to the resort’s seaplane lounge. Here, comfort, Wi-Fi, and refreshments await before the final leg of the journey to the island itself. Despite its remote location, the resort maintains the streamlined efficiency expected of a major brand like IHG, combining it with the relaxed atmosphere of an island escape. The Raa Atoll’s natural lagoon, where the resort is set, offers crystal-clear water and uninterrupted views of the horizon. The surrounding ocean stretches out as far as the eye can see, merging seamlessly with the sky, making it an ideal location for those seeking serenity and isolation. Chic Accommodations at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau The resort features 81 luxurious villas, designed to provide comfort and privacy. Each villa reflects a harmonious blend of Maldivian craftsmanship and modern luxury. The three main accommodation categories—beach villas, overwater bungalows, and lagoon villas—offer something for every type of guest. In this InterContinental Maldives review, the standout feature of all villas is that they come with Club InterContinental benefits, elevating the experience with a range of complimentary services. Beach Villas The Beach Villas are nestled along the pristine shoreline, hidden among towering palms and lush tropical greenery. Each villa features a private pool, direct beach access, and spacious outdoor areas, perfect for those who want to be surrounded by nature. The interiors, while minimalist, feature thoughtful touches that nod to Maldivian artisans, such as rattan furniture and hand-woven wall hangings. This subtle blend of local culture and modern comfort provides a tranquil escape. Overwater Villas The overwater bungalows are the epitome of Maldivian luxury. Perched above the lagoon, these villas offer uninterrupted views of the ocean and direct access to the water. Though the interiors might feel a bit pared back compared to the more opulent resorts in the Maldives, the overall ambiance of these overwater retreats is one of peaceful solitude. Guests can swim in their private pools, lounge on their decks, or step directly into the lagoon to explore the vibrant marine life below. Lagoon Villas Combining the best of both worlds, the Lagoon Villas are situated around the serene lagoon, offering both ocean views and lush surroundings. These villas also come with private pools, perfect for soaking up the Maldivian sun in privacy. While the design is understated, there are charming touches such as beaded lamps and hand-crafted decor that reflect the resort’s commitment to blending luxury with local heritage. Dining at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort: A Culinary Journey The resort boasts six restaurants and bars, each offering a unique culinary experience. From all-day dining to fine dining, the options cater to every taste and preference. Café Umi Café Umi serves as the resort’s all-day dining venue, offering a breakfast buffet that rivals any in the Maldives. With fresh tropical fruits, a vast selection of pastries, and rotating South Asian dishes like Sri Lankan hoppers or Maldivian tuna curry, it sets the tone for indulgence. Lunch and dinner feature a menu that blends international and Asian flavours, focusing on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Lighthouse The Lighthouse is the resort’s signature restaurant, offering Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Perched above the water, guests can climb to the top for panoramic 360-degree views of the Indian Ocean, making it the perfect spot for sunset cocktails before dinner. The menu is seafood-focused, using locally sourced ingredients to create a fine dining experience that pairs perfectly with the breathtaking surroundings. Read the full Lighthouse review. Fish Market For a more interactive dining experience, the Fish Market allows guests to select their own fresh seafood, which is then cooked to their specifications with a blend of Maldivian spices. Set on the beachfront, this restaurant provides a true sea-to-table concept, where local fishermen supply the freshest catches of the day. The Retreat The Retreat is an adults-only enclave within the resort, offering private cabanas, an infinity pool, and a menu of cocktails and light bites. This is the perfect place for couples to unwind, away from the more family-friendly areas of the resort. The atmosphere is serene, with stunning views of the lagoon and personalised service that makes every guest feel pampered. Club InterContinental benefits is available for ALL guests, which is an incredibly generous offer. These benefits could easily cost north of $200 per person, per day, and include. - Breakfast  - Afternoon tea from 3pm-5pm - Cocktails and canapés from 5pm-7pm.  - Soft drinks at The Retreat and Pool Bar from 11am-6pm Experiences and Activities at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort From marine conservation efforts to wellness retreats, the resort offers a wide range of activities that cater to all interests. Manta Trust and Marine Discovery Centre One of the resort’s most impressive features is its collaboration with the Manta Trust , a marine conservation organisation dedicated to protecting manta rays. Guests can join marine biologists on guided snorkelling trips to swim with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The Marine Discovery Centre also offers educational programs on ocean conservation, allowing guests to learn about the delicate ecosystems of the Maldives and participate in efforts to preserve them. The nearby Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is home to Hanifaru Bay, famous for its coral reefs and abundant marine life, including manta rays, whale sharks, and sea turtles. With a rotating roster of visiting wellness experts, such as Joao Santos—renowned for his innovative dry massage techniques—the spa ensures that every treatment is tailored to the guest’s needs. Whether it’s a traditional Maldivian massage or reflexology, the spa’s expert therapists deliver personalized care in a serene, overwater setting. For fitness enthusiasts, the resort also features a gym and yoga studio, with classes held overlooking the shore. This blend of physical wellness and mental relaxation is ideal for guests seeking a holistic experience. For guests looking to explore the underwater world, guided diving excursions take them to some of the best reefs in the Raa Atoll, offering a chance to see reef sharks, eagle rays, and vibrant coral gardens. Service and Hospitality at InterContinental Maldives In this InterContinental Maldives review, it’s important to highlight that the service truly sets the resort apart. Each villa is assigned a dedicated host, ensuring that every guest’s stay is tailored to their personal preferences. This starts even before arrival, with a pre-arrival questionnaire that asks for details like favorite drinks and movies. Upon arrival, guests might find their favourite drink waiting for them at the bar, or even personalised desserts in their room—like a chocolate cake shaped like a beloved pet. The use of WhatsApp for easy communication ensures that requests for activities, dining, or transportation are handled promptly without overburdening the island hosts. This seamless service, combined with a warm and friendly attitude, creates a truly personalized and pampered experience. Eco-Conscious Efforts The resort takes its environmental responsibilities seriously, participating in IHG’s Green Engage initiative, which aims to reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact. Solar panels provide 15% of the resort’s energy needs, and an ultrafiltration system efficiently recycles waste water. The resort has also committed to reducing plastic use by 90% and glass waste by 80%, though specific timelines for these goals have yet to be established. The villa’s design seamlessly blended modern elegance with tranquility, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that opened onto a spacious private deck. This was my personal retreat, complete with sun loungers and direct access to the lagoon—perfect for a peaceful moment in the sun or a refreshing swim in the turquoise waters. The interior was equally luxurious, with a plush king-size bed, a spacious bathroom with an outdoor rain shower, and elegant furnishings that reflected contemporary Maldivian style. Dining at Velassaru The dining experiences at Velassaru Maldives are as varied as they are exceptional. Every meal felt like an event in itself, with the chefs curating dishes that reflected both International flavours and local Maldivian ingredients. I started each morning at Vela , the resort’s main restaurant, where breakfast is a lavish affair. Freshly squeezed juices, tropical fruits, and pastries that would rival any French bakery were on offer, as well as a wide selection of hot dishes. Whether I was in the mood for a traditional Maldivian breakfast or an indulgent stack of pancakes, Vela catered to every craving. One of my most memorable dining experiences was at Sand , an intimate beachfront restaurant where the catch of the day is prepared to perfection. There’s something so special about dining with your feet in the sand, under the stars, as the gentle sound of waves accompanies your meal. The freshness of the seafood and the skill of the chefs made this dinner a true highlight of my stay. For something a bit more theatrical, Teppanyaki is a must. Perched over the lagoon, this Japanese restaurant not only serves some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever tasted, but the chefs also put on a spectacular show, grilling dishes right in front of you with flair and precision. Watching the sunset while enjoying a perfectly prepared sashimi platter is an experience I won’t soon forget. And of course, there’s Chill Bar —the ultimate spot to wind down after a day of sun and sea. Whether you’re seeking an adrenaline rush or a moment of pure tranquility, there’s something here for every type of traveller. For the adventurers, the Immersion Dive and Watersports Centre offers everything from snorkelling and diving excursions to kayaking and paddleboarding. I spent one morning snorkelling just off the island’s lagoon, and although Velassaru doesn’t have its own house reef, the surrounding waters are home to a variety of marine life. Schools of vibrant fish swam just below me, and I was lucky enough to spot a graceful turtle gliding through the water. One of the most memorable experiences of my stay was the dolphin-watching cruise. As the sun set, we set out across the calm waters in search of dolphins, and we were not disappointed. Watching pods of dolphins leap and play alongside the boat as the sky turned shades of pink and orange was a moment of pure magic. For those looking to unwind, the Velassaru Spa is a sanctuary of peace and tranquility. Set over the water, the spa offers panoramic views of the lagoon, and each treatment room is designed to make you feel as though you’re floating above the ocean. I opted for the Velassaru Ritual, a combination of a seaweed wrap and a full-body massage that left me feeling rejuvenated and completely at ease. Final word on Velassaru "The service is always so personal, discreet and thoughtful. Everyone knows your name, remembers your drink and food preferences and chat to you like guests in their own home." Dining here is not just about the food—it’s about the experience, which includes stargazing with the resort’s resident astronomer before your meal. For more casual dining, The Living Room offers all-day options in a relaxed, chic setting. This central hub also features a library, boutique, and rooms dedicated to ice cream, chocolate, and cheese—each a paradise in its own right.
