Maldives - Everything you need to know before visiting

The Maldives, a paradise vacation destination.

Maldives - Everything you need to know before visiting

Nestled in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is a South Asian island nation that offers everything one could dream of in a tropical getaway. From pristine white sandy beaches to luxurious over-the-water villas, vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, world-class dining, and unparalleled hospitality, the Maldives is the perfect destination for a special occasion such as a honeymoon or anniversary. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know before visiting the Maldives.

Location

Maldives Patina Island

Located in the Indian Ocean, south of India and southwest of Sri Lanka, the Maldives is an archipelago of about 1200 islands. Only a few of these islands are inhabited, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a secluded, luxury getaway.

Getting to the Maldives

Maldives Sea Plane

To reach the Maldives, you will first need to take a flight to the capital city of Male. From there, you can take a seaplane or speedboat to your island destination. The seaplane experience is one of the most exciting parts of the trip, though it is also the most expensive. If you're flying from the US or South America, consider combining your trip with another Asian travel destination, such as India or Sri Lanka, for a well-rounded experience.

Where to stay in the Maldives

Maldives - Everything you need to know before visiting

The Maldives is made up of 1200 islands, with most of them being small and occupied by only a single hotel or a small group of hotels. This makes the Maldives a perfect destination for those seeking a private and exclusive experience, even during peak season. When it comes to choosing where to stay, all atolls have their own unique charm and beauty, so it all comes down to personal preference. Here are some of the most popular atolls:

  • Ari Atoll: Comprising 70 islands, this is a large atoll in North Maldives and is considered (by some) the most beautiful of all the atolls.

  • Alifu Atoll: This atoll is technically under North Ari Atoll and is a great spot for watching hammerhead sharks and dolphins.

  • Baa Atoll: The Baa atoll is home to the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and is famous for Hanifaru Huraa, a bay full of whale sharks, manta rays, and other forms of marine life from July to November.

  • Noonu Atoll: A secluded destination for luxury travelers, Noonu Atoll boasts high densities of fusiliers, snappers, and spinner dolphins.

  • Rasdhoo Atoll: A popular destination for budget travelers, Rashdoo Atoll is a smaller atoll surrounded by a circular lagoon, with a rich history of Buddhism.

Planning your trip to the Maldives

Maldives - Planning your trip

When planning your trip to the Maldives, it's important to consider what you want to do while there. The island nation offers a wide range of activities, but it's also the perfect destination to simply relax and enjoy the sun. Here are some tips for planning your trip:

  • Research, research, research: The Maldives has many beautiful hotels to choose from, catering to a wide range of budgets and interests. Make sure to research the different options and activities available to you.

  • Know when to go: The holiday (Dry) season between December and March brings many visitors to the Maldives, whilst also being the most expensive time to visit, so consider avoiding it if you're looking for a more budget friendly, relaxed and secluded experience (I personally favour the shoulder months of April and May for the right mix of price v's weather).

  • Book in advance: Once you know when and where you want to go, be sure to book well in advance to ensure the best experience and price possible (many hotels offer advance booking promotions/discounts).

  • Special occasion: Make sure to inform the hotel about any special occasion when making your booking. This will allow them to cater to your specific needs, for example by offering private villas for honeymoons or rooms with easy beach access for families with children.

Selecting the perfect hotel in the Maldives

Maldives - selecting your perfect hotel

Now, let's dive into the process of how to book the perfect hotel in the Maldives.

  • Determine your budget One of the first things to consider is your budget. With so many options to choose from, it's easy to get carried away with upgrades and experiences. To ensure that you stay within your budget, it's important to set a budget for yourself and stick to it.

  • Identify your must-have requirements Before starting your search, it's important to identify your must-have requirements. For example, when I was booking our hotel, I knew I wanted to experience a water villa, and that I wanted to snorkel in the lagoons. This helped narrow down my options and made the process much easier.

  • Choose the right location The Maldives is made up of different atolls, and each atoll has its own set of hotels and Marine life. Based on your requirements, you can choose which atoll and hotel make the most sense for you.

  • Pick the right type of villa The Maldives offers a variety of villa options, including beach villas, water villas, and sunset villas. Based on your needs and budget, you can choose the right type of villa for you. For example, if you're celebrating a special occasion, you may want to opt for a water villa, whereas if you're traveling with kids, a beach villa may be more suitable.

  • Decide on sunrise or sunset villa (for water villas only) For water villas, you have the option of choosing between a sunrise or sunset villa. Sunrise villas tend to be slightly cheaper, while sunset villas offer more privacy and a more luxurious experience. If you're a morning person, you may prefer a sunrise villa, whereas if you're someone who likes to stay up late, a sunset villa may be a better fit.

Seaplane and Boat transfers

Maldives boat transfer

When planning a trip to the Maldives, it is crucial to factor in all the costs associated with your hotel booking. One often-overlooked cost is the cost of getting to your hotel from the main airport in Male. This is usually done via seaplane or speedboat, and it is important to consider these costs before finalizing your hotel booking.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to seaplane or speedboat transfers in the Maldives:

  • Budget for seaplane or speedboat transfer costs The cost of these transfers can vary, but they are typically not cheap. Before you book your hotel, be sure to check the cost of the transfers and factor it into your overall budget.

  • Timing of flights It is important to note that seaplanes fly only from dawn to dusk. If you book a flight that lands in Male later in the day, you may end up having to spend an additional night in Male before being able to reach your hotel the next day. To avoid this, try to book flights that land in Male earlier in the day.

  • Return flights Similarly, it is best to avoid early morning return flights. This is because you may need to be transported from your island to Male the evening before your return flight. To avoid the inconvenience of an early morning transfer, try to book a return flight that leaves Male later in the day.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure that your hotel booking experience in the Maldives is seamless and stress-free.

Should you go all-Inclusive

Maldives all-inclusive option

When booking a hotel, it is important to determine your preferred meal plan. One of the most common options is all-inclusive, which includes all meals, drinks, and activities.

While this may seem convenient, unless you like to drink or for a hassle-free all-in-one solution it is not always the most cost-effective choice.

Instead, consider a half-board (breakfast and dinner) if you wish to save money. as most of the resorts have huge buffets, you'll probably find that you won't even need to eat lunch after trying everything on offer at breakfast and dinner!

Ultimately, the best meal plan will depend on your personal preferences and budget, so take the time to weigh your options carefully before making a final decision.

How long should my trip to Maldives be

Maldives - Everything you need to know before visiting

Planning your Maldives itinerary can be a bit of a challenge, especially with so many stunning options to choose from. To help you make the most of your time on this beautiful island nation, I highly recommend spending at least 5 to 7 days in the Maldives. This will allow you to settle into your room or villa, explore the island, and truly soak in all that this paradise has to offer.

One of my favorite things to do when I first arrive is to spend some time relaxing and getting comfortable in my surroundings. Whether it's lounging by the pool, exploring the reefs in the lagoon, or just taking a moment to enjoy the beauty of my room or villa, I believe that it's important to take your time and fully immerse yourself in your surroundings.

If you are planning to hop from island to island, I would recommend adding a day for travel between each destination and spending at least a couple of days on each island. This will give you plenty of time to experience all that each island has to offer and make the most of your time in the Maldives.

Final word

"If you're looking for a truly luxurious and memorable experience in the Maldives, consider booking a stay in a water villa, especially if you're celebrating a special occasion. The Maldives is home to some of the world's finest hotels, making it the perfect place to splurge on a dream vacation with loved ones.

However, if you're on a tighter budget, don't worry. There are still plenty of affordable hotel options available. To keep costs down, I recommend choosing a hotel close to the island of Male. The further away from the island, the more expensive it will be to reach via seaplane or boat transfer."
